Besides, you do have auto-completion with a floating bubble :-). "#magazine" and not some nicely designed text bubble, but that's in line with the app's "pure markdown editor design". One thing I don't like and that I forgot to mention is that iA Writer lists its tags as pure markdown, i.e. Finally, this article provides an overview of several writing apps that I found useful. I also found this article by MereCivilian helpful. It is a little dated (2017) but the fundamentals are covered making the article relevant today. Smart folders are somewhat limited in that you can only create them based on file paths, a content search and kind. I found this article to be one of the more complete and objective that I’ve read comparing iA Writer to Ulysses. That's fine by me, as that is how tags were developed originally. Tags: these are real tags, not the tags that Bear supports. As these are no different than the ones you create in the Finder, it doesn't matter much. I find myself organizing folders in the Finder the most, as that makes more sense to my workflow (journalist), but I've also created folders inside iA Writer. From within iA Writer, you can also create folders and docs. If you already have folders with text documents, you can add the folders to iA Writer's sidebar and all docs inside become visible and usable. First, you have an iCloud drive location that one is always available as it's hardwired into the app. All plans unlock the app on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and it features full cross-platform synchronization. The folder structure works both ways. In order to use Ulysses (available for iOS and macOS only), a monthly or yearly subscription is required, but a free trial is available via Apple App Store. Ulysses shows thumbnails of images within the document, but iA Writer handles images in a similar way to content blocks: in writing mode, instead of the actual image, a link is visible switching to Preview mode shows the image as it will appear when published. Built-in export styles help ensure that the finished product looks just how you want it, and Ulysses allows users to share documents directly to a wide variety of third-party apps. Documents can be exported as eBooks, DOCX, PDFs and HTML, or as a blog published directly to WordPress, Ghost, or Medium. The app has useful export options as well. Users can visit Ulysses’ style & theme website and download the style or theme they want for free. And the text editor is themeable, so users with particular visual preferences such as dark mode can choose the style that works best for them. Ulysses also has some useful accessibility features with voiceover, dictation, and text-to-speech support. An integrated grammar and style check analyzes your text and offers informed suggestions for capitalization, punctuation, semantics, redundancy, style and more. Ulysses is a markup-based mobile word processor that’s designed to be distraction free, easy to use, but still packed with powerful writing features. Ulysses is not available for Windows but there are plenty of alternatives that runs on Windows with similar functionality.
